WASHINGTON STATE
2019 - 2024
Floodplains by Design (FbD) is an ambitious integrated floodplain management public-private partnership between the Washington Department of Ecology and an NGO "backbone" organization working to reduce flood risk, improve working lands, and restore habitat. FbD includes a large grant program that supports diverse local collaboratives to develop and implement multi-benefit projects and state level action or advisory groups to support increased funding, policy improvements, capacity building, and collaboration.

Since 2013, FbD has received $283 million from the Washington State Legislature which has reconnected over 11,374 acres of floodplains, removed or reduced flood risk to 8,482 homes or structures and reduced flood risk for 85 different communities.

Since 2019, I have advocated for FbD capital funding to the Washington State Legislature, co-lead the Funding and Policy Action Group (FPAG) from 2021-2024 as a member of the NGO backbone team, and supported program communications and outreach to increase the pace and scale of integrated floodplain management
